As the seasons changes allergies seem to come right with them. Allergies not only affect humans, our furry friends are prone to them as well. There are three main types of allergies?to look for in your pet: Atopy, Food Allergies and Contact Dermatitis.

Atopy

Atopy allergies are the most common form of allergies in cats and dogs. Usually seasonal can be caused by ragweed in the Fall or tree pollen in the Spring. In the Winter when they spend more time indoors you pet may be allergic to dust mites.

Symptoms may?include:

  • Constant licking of the side
  • Rubbing the face
  • Chewing their feet
  • Facial Scabbing (cats)
  • Hot Spots (dogs)

Food Allergies

Food Allergies make up about 10-15 percent of pet allergies with other allergies.

Symptoms may include:

  • Ear problems; which may be yeast-related.
  • Itching around the face, anal, feet or trunk areas.
  • Increased bowel movements or soft stools

Contact Dermatitis

There are two types of contact dermatitis irritant and allergic. Allergic is when your pet becomes hypersensitive to certain substances in the environment. Repeated contact can cause the allergy. Common chemicals can be flea powders or collars, shampoos, grass and even material such as rubber or plastic. Irritant allergies can occur after first contact with chemicals, plants or fertilizers.

Symptoms include:

  • Loss of fur
  • Itching and inflammation
  • Scaling, lesions or hives
  • Licking and excessive biting
